LEEKS (Allium porrum)

Leeks are close relatives of onions and are part of the royal lily family. They come from Central Asia and have been eaten since the dawn of time. They began their historical journey in antiquity. Hence, leeks were already on the menu in Egypt. Romans, who initiated gastronomy, used to cook a lot with leeks, especially for their great feasts.

Then, leeks were cultivated in Europe in the Middle Ages, and they have been appreciated ever since. The leek even became the emblem of Whales and still remains its national vegetable. When the first settlers arrived in North America, the culture of leeks spread troughout the New World. Therefore, leeks have been used to enhance a wide range of meals, as a vegetable or a condiment.

Leeks can be more than a soup. They can be vegetable or condiment, and are really “TRENDY” in modern cooking.
